The Model TC-2 Balancer
is a balancing unit of the free suspension
or "soft bearing" type. The part to be balanced is suspended in
carriers free to move in the horizontal plane from the front to
the back of the machine. The supporting structure has a natural
frequency which is below the balancing speeds and therefore is
free to move in this plane when an imbalanced part is rotated in
the carriers. On each carrier is a vibration pickup of the acceler-
ometer type. As each carrier moves back and forth from the force
of the imbalance, the vibration pickups produce a small voltage
which is proportionate to the movement, which in turn is propor-
tionate to the imbalance in the workpiece.
The electronic amplifier and filter unit receives the imbalance
signals from each of the two pickups, filters out the unwanted
voltages of other frequencies and amplifies the wanted signals.
One section of the electronics utilizes the amplified signal to
give an indication of the amount of the imbalance. In conjunc-
tion with an electrical network system it can mix the two signals
to develop plane separation, the ability to determine the amount
of correction in each of two selected correction planes so that
a correction in one will not effect the indication in the other.
Another section of the electronics develops the signal further to
trigger the stroboscopic light. The strobe light is triggered
once each revolution of the workpiece. When this flash is
directed at the rotating body, it will appear to "freeze" the
workpiece in that position of the rotational cycle. As the
signal to trigger the strobe light is developed by the imbalance
signal, there is a definite relationship between the point on
the rotor that is visible and the location of the imbalance.
The designer of a product generally will provide a balancing
tolerance and determine two radial correction planes where
material can be added or removed to balance the mass around the
rotational axis. The balancer can be set up to determine the
amount of and location of the imbalance, so that the proper
corrections can be made.

All standard Heins balancing mandrels or arbors are precision
ground to assure high finish quality and outstanding concentricity.
Mandrels are provided with a bearing journal area, a tapered
diameter to locate in the workpiece bore, and a pulley portion to
accept the balancing machine drive belt. Normally, the taper is
.0005" over the length of the mandrel.

All mandrels are case hardened 60-65 Rc, and ground concentric
within .00003". Custom mandrels for any bore size can be made.
*Due to their small size, these mandrels require Heins VEE adapters
P/N TC-3-016C and delrin VEE bearings P/N TC-3-016V
